The. Best. Weight. Loss. Advice. Ever.
In July of 2009 I read the best weight loss article ever published on the internet. It was written by Nia Shanks. You may have seen her on Lift Like A Girl TV, or with the Girls Gone Strong crew.
Within that article was the holy grail of weight loss advice. If you forgot, or unlearned, everything you ever knew about diet, exercise, weight loss, and fitness, and just followed this one piece of advice, then you would never need to learn anything else. And that piece of advice is…
Train For Performance
Today’s interview is with Nia Shanks, coach, fitness writer, and creator of the Lift Like A Girl phenomenon.
In 2009, I read an article on EliteFTS.com called “A Better Way to Achieve Fat Loss,” and in that article Nia drops this fat loss knowledge bomb…
If you have been trying to lose weight for years without success, then stop whatever you are currently doing and try this approach:
- Throw your bathroom scale in the trash
- Quit whatever diet you are on
- Spend the next year of your life getting faster and stronger.
Is weight loss “just that easy?” Maybe. The problem is, when I say it, I sound like a complete jerk.
When I read Nia’s article in 2009, I knew that I had struck gold. I wanted to share it with everyone I knew who was struggling with weight loss. Here was an article for women by a woman who had struggled with the same issues. The article was backed by science and in the trenches experimentation.
If you know anyone who is struggling to lose weight, please share this interview with them. I believe that what Nia has to teach about fitness, exercise, & diet can completely change someones life.
Enjoy the interview, and don’t forget to share…
Nia, thanks for interviewing with us. How and when did you get started in fitness?
I was blessed to have a Mom who was very much into health and fitness. In fact, she was the first woman personal trainer in our area and she’s the one who introduced me to strength training. It’s something I started doing around the age of 15 and haven’t stopped since.
How do you stay motivated to live a healthy lifestyle?
In all honesty, it’s a habit. It’s something I’ve always done and always will do. Having a body that serves me and provides me with a high quality of life is a high priority.
With regard to weight loss / fat burning, what type of exercise has worked best for you?
Strength training is my favorite tool for fat loss and building a lean body.
What does your current diet consist of? Do you try to keep a strict diet?
The word “strict” is not in my vocabulary when it comes to my health and fitness lifestyle. I prefer to follow simple, flexible guidelines that turn into lifelong habits.
I eat primarily real, whole foods and indulge in my favorite not-so-healthy foods when I truly want them. I listen to my body and eat when I’m hungry, stop when satisfied (but not stuffed), and try my best to eat slowly (though I still mess up because I have a tendency to eat really fast if I don’t pay attention).
Editor’s Note: Nia also has a really freaking awesome YouTube Channel. See video below.
What are your current fitness goals and what does your training routine look like?
Right now I’m focusing on getting stronger, gradually, in a few main barbell and body weight exercises. I strength train three days per week, currently, and mountain bike as often as possible.
My workout routines change regularly based on my interests, goals, and as of lately my other physical hobbies, such as mountain biking.
What obstacles or setbacks have you had to overcome to achieve your desired physique?
Without a doubt my battle with binge eating and other disordered eating habits in combination with a terrible self-image.

Lift Like A Girl
When I built this website, I started by creating a list of people to interview and introduce to as many of my readers as possible.
Nia Shanks was at the top of that list. I did not know here, she did not know me, but I knew that I needed to have her on this site because I sincerely believe in her philosophy on fitness.
It is the very same philosophy I use, and teach to anyone who will listen.
As a fitness blogger you get the chance to promote many fitness products. It is rare that you find a fitness product and a fitness professional that you completely believe in. And because of that I get very nervous when somebody asks me to promote their product.
Nia did not ask me to promote anything for her. I asked her if I could interview her for my website.
I’ve been sharing her articles and philosophy with anyone who would listen since 2009.
I created this website with the intention of sharing her philosophy of fitness with as many people as possible.
A lot of people hate selling stuff or doing anything “salesy” or looking like a sales man. I am one of those people. I get embarrassed when I have to sale anything to anyone.
But when you find a great product, you want to share it with people.
If you are a woman struggling with any aspect of fitness (weight loss, exercise, diet, self image, etc.) then I want you to have this product, even if I have to sell it to you.
I know so many women struggling with weight loss, exercise, and fitness, and I know that this this program can help,
…and I want you to experience the life-changing event that following a program like this will create for you.
At some point in your life you have to make a decision.
One of my college professors used to say, “If what you are doing is not working, do something else.“
If you spend your day unhappy and discontent with how you look, and if you are constantly stressed with how you are exercising or what you are eating, then it’s time for you to get this thing handled once and for all.
It’s time to get the right knowledge, from an expert in the industry, and kick this whole weight loss thing in the teeth.
Still not convinced? Let me take all of the risk out of the equation for you…
